Hello Sarah how are you and what have you been up to recently?
I‘m doing great! I‘m in NYC at the airport right now, I was visiting family here. Now I’m waiting for my flight back to Detroit.
I‘m the current exchange artist from the Detroit-Berlin Connection/Musicboard Berlin which means I get 6 weeks in Detroit to work on my debut EP at the Underground Resistance headquarters. I already have spent 5 weeks there and now I have like a week left before I travel back to Berlin and Egypt to give DJ workshops & perform.
Detroit has been an extremely educational & positive experience so far. I‘m very grateful that I got this opportunity and get to learn from wonderful people like Mad Mike.
It is extremly important for me to visit music birth places and learn where the music & culture comes from that inspire me so much. Connecting & exchanging with (music) communities in different places at eye level is what matters to me.
You live in Berlin. How would you describe the city and music scene there at the moment?
Berlin is like a Disneyland for grown ups, it’s still cheap in comparison to cities like NY, London, Amsterdam and so on and the health insurance is also good (I mean it still sucks but compared to some other places in the world it’s good) and it’s safe. Those things make living quite comfortable in Berlin. I think those factors relax people to a certain point. I feel like that’s why Berlin feels very laid back. In terms of BPM Berlin is like 120 or 60 BPM and London for example is 160 BPM, like a Jungle tune haha. At least it feels like this to me. I like Berlin. It’s not too big and it’s not too small and lots of great DJs come to play here. Also, I’m very happy to see more diversity happening in terms of music styles & line-ups. The club scene is becoming more open minded and also more political.
What annoys you or has pissed you off lately?
People who don’t want to see the connection between music (culture) & politics.
And the relation between racism, sexism & classism. These things are necessarily related and if we want to achieve equality, we need to address all of those topics. The future is interesectional.
What excites you besides music?
I really do love animals, especially dogs and I love stupid memes and gifs ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Anything coming up you want to share with us? Any shout-outs or final statements?
Yesss! As I mentioned earlier, I‘m working on my debut EP right now that I‘m planning to share it with the world later this year.
This release will be a reflection of my „Rainbowbass“ DJ sets. I describe the music I play as „Rainbowbass“, which is a term that I came up with to introduce the music I love to others.
For me, the vibrations of everything I listen to, everything I play, translate into color. Sounds visualised like a rainbow – naturally connected to each other and to me. The message of Rainbowbass is that it’s all one, like we are. All the grooves, BPMs & energy levels in beautiful harmony. It’s also about breaking boundaries in club music and combining different music styles like I do in my DJ sets.
And I want to shout out all the people who are fighting for equality in all forms and fields, creating safe spaces, inclusive (dancefloors) environments worldwide & rainbows ~ sending love to all of you
